Marv's Classic Soda Shop

Picture the 1950s, or at least what you think the 50s should look like. Juke boxes, black and pink leather, burgers shakes and more. Either you've time travelled, or you found yourself at Marv's Diner in Black Diamond. Located just west of the 4-way stop on your way through town, Marv's serves as a perfect stop on your way to or home from an adventure in Kananaskis Country.

The front of the restaurant serves as a candy store and ice cream parlour, and Melissa and I found ourselves wandering about the candy section before sitting down to eat in a weak attempt to not appear as starving as we really were. If you are looking for the candies and sodas of yesteryear, then look no further.

After eventually meandering our way to a retro styled booth, we were quickly greeted with friendly service. We ordered two Cokes that came in classic glass bottles, although it appeared there were various beverages available, including old fashioned floats that looked great. Some time I hope to go back and grab one, lactose intolerance be damned.

The food menu featured many delicious sounding burgers, including ones with toppings like pineapple, spicy Cajun seasoning and even a few topped with peanut butter, which is what immediately caught my attention. Rounding out the menu were various types of hotdogs, including a euro-dog topped with sauerkraut and a chili-dog, which Melissa ordered.

The menu states that the burgers are made from Alberta beef, and that the hot dogs are produced locally. My hamburger, The Skinny Bob, featured lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, onions, mayo, a spicy kick of seasoning and peanut butter. If you haven't tried a peanut butter burger before, don't let the idea scare you off. It pairs well with the savoury beef, and adds a layer of sweetness to your burger. Melissa's chili-dog looked like a solid chili-dog, and they didn't hold back on the chili. Grab a side of fries with whatever you order as well, as I was pleasantly surprised by their crispness and layer of flavourful seasoning salt.

Next time you find yourself passing through Black Diamond, make sure to stop in at Marv's for a shake and a burger while you take in all the nostalgia the diner has to offer.
